the primitive intestine is formed
the cerebral cortex (outer layer of the brain) is formed






five weeks

the embryo is now one-third of an inch long
the the limb buds develop






six weeks

the sex organs develop
the embryo now has a full skeletal system






seven weeks

the reflexes begin to be active
fingers and toes are clearly defined






eight weeks

the fetus (Latin for 'little one')is now two inches long
every organ is now in place
the stomach produces digestive juices
the baby's finger and footprints are clearly visible
the child responds to painful stimuli
the infant can make a fist
the kidneys begin to function






nine weeks

sex hormones are elaborated
the individual limbs move

ultrasound at 10-weeks (0.9 meg)

the fingernails are developing
the baby squints and frowns when the forehead is touched
the child sucks the thumbs, fingers, and toes






eleven weeks

inhales and exhales amniotic fluid
the child is extremely sensitive to touch, heat, sound, and pain
the vocal cords are forming
the baby bends the knees and can push against the uterus






twelve weeks

the thyroid gland is functioning
the fetus weighs one ounce
the infant is three inches long
facial features can be similar to the parents
the baby is very lively with kicking, turning feet, curling toes, moving the thumb,
bending the wrist and moving the head
frowning, opening the mouth, and pressing the lips together
the muscles and nerves are clearing functioning






fourteen weeks

opens the mouth and swallows regularly





sixteen weeks

the child is six to ten inches long
the vocal cords are completely developed
its own primitive eggs and sperm are formed and it can urinate
all twenty milk-teeth buds are in place






twenty weeks

the baby is, on average, twelve inches long now
the hair and eyebrows grow
the child reacts to outside noise and vibrations






twenty-two weeks

the baby can open its eyes





twenty-four weeks

the child averages fourteen inches tall





twenty-eight weeks

the skin is red and wrinkled
the eyelids open






thirty-two weeks

the baby is now sixteen inches tall and weighs an average of three and one-half pounds





thirty-six weeks

the skin fades and the wrinkles start to smooth out
the fingernails project to the fingertips






forty weeks

the child is now about twenty inches long and weighs around seven pounds





one year

head is finally regaining its orbital pre-birth shape





ten years

child is slowly being weaned from its mother





twenty years

other meaningful brain development hopefully begins





thirty-five years

for many individuals, some sense of viability is finally being attained





fifty years

child is completely weaned from its mother





eighty years

the 'fourth childhood' begins





one hundred years

due to gravity, the body size shrinks to be only four inches tall
